There are some spaces that remind you, very quickly, what community work is really about.
Kwetu Home of Peace was one of those spaces for us.
On 28 February 2025, Start Walking Foundation visited Kwetu Home of Peace, a children's home that works with boys rescued from the streets and supports their rehabilitation, reintegration, and return to stable care through education, psychosocial support, and family reconnection.
Our visit was not simply about giving.
It was about showing up with presence, dignity, and care.
Over the course of the day, we spent time with more than 40 children at the home — sharing conversation, meals, laughter, and moments of genuine connection.
What we carried with us were simple contributions: 35 pairs of sandals, 20 kilograms of sugar, and supplies for the day.
But what the day asked of us was something more meaningful than donation.
It asked us to be present.
We cooked and shared a meal with the children. We spent time in conversation and play. We engaged in simple activities that created room for joy, connection, and encouragement.
One of the most practical moments of the visit was a soap-making session with the children — a small but meaningful skills activity designed to introduce a simple income-generating skill they could carry forward.
It was a reminder that support is not only about meeting immediate needs, but also about creating pathways to confidence, dignity, and possibility.
What stood out most
What stood out most was not the giving. It was the atmosphere.
There was laughter.
There was curiosity.
There was openness.
And there was a visible sense of hope in the room.
For us, that mattered.
Beyond material need
Community work often asks urgent questions about what people need. And those questions are important.
But days like this remind us that beyond material need, there is also the need to be seen, to be affirmed, and to be met with dignity.
That, too, is part of care.
Our time at Kwetu Home of Peace was a reminder that meaningful service is not only about what is delivered. It is also about how people are encountered.
What we carry forward
As Start Walking Foundation continues to grow, this remains one of the values we hope to carry forward in every space we enter:
that service must be practical,
but it must also be human.
